An Open Letter to Prime Minister Dr. Lawrence Gonzi

11th October 2010

Dear Dr. Gonzi

During the last few days EU Commissioner John Dalli asked you to conduct an investigation into the false accusations made against him. In his case the person responsible has been convicted and punished accordingly.

On the 17th October 1999 John Dalli falsely and maliciously accused me of sending 20, 000 anonymous letters claiming to defame him. After a long criminal investigation lasting three (3) years eleven (11) months fifteen (15) days I was acquitted of all the false charges John Dalli made against me.

His accusations caused untold harm to my family and I to the point that we had to return to the U.K. because it became impossible for me to find employment due to the character assassination that was perpetrated against me.

As a Maltese citizen and according to our constitution and laws, all citizens are considered to be equal in the eyes of the law. I therefore request that you will start an independent judicial and impartial investigation into this case.

I consider it a human right for my family and I to find out who were the people responsible for such a serious and pathetic crime. At the time Commissioner John Dalli as Minister made a public pledge that the people responsible will be caught no matter the cost or the time it may take. The case was never solved and I am legally entitled to have the case reopened and investigated accordingly.

I assure you of my full co-operation when you give instructions for this case to be re-opened.

It is ironic that Commissioner John Dalli made a big fuss about a case that has been solved and not the anonymous letters case. This was far more serious and involved many people. However, I was the only person to have criminal charges made against me by John Dalli and the police.

I take the opportunity to thank you for your kind and urgent consideration in this matter. My family and I look forward to your urgent reply.

Yours sincerely,
Joseph Ellul-Grech
